DAVID
GONZALEZ - BIOGRAPHY
Born in San Francisco to 1st
generation San Franciscans of Mexican
heritage,
David first began singing in front of
audiences at family functions while only
3Years of age.
While being nurtured by the sounds of
Ellington, Basie, Goodman, etc. and
alternately the music on Sunday mornings from
the Mexican radio programs (Everything from
John Phillip Sousa to Jorge Negrete) emanating
from the old Philco,
David assimilated a broad range of musical
styles in the jazz and Latin Curriculum (s),
thanks to his parents love of music.
David formed his own and sang in other
groups while in Jr. High School (Everett) and
in High School (Polytechnic). "My first
professional gig was in 1961 at a place on
Polk St. in San Francisco called the Travel
Agency. The pay was all the beer you could
drink, but I was in my teens and looked even
younger, so the waitress wouldn't serve me.
After combining performing and studies at
City College of San Francisco and parenthetically,
San Francisco State University (plus a stint
with the U.S. Army), David became a fixture in
popular nightclubs throughout the San
Francisco bay area.
His rich voice and colorful lyric
interpretations have often brought comparisons
to those of Mel
Torme and Mark Murphy, although David has well
established his own distinctive sound and
style. To quote the legendary bassist Vernon
Alley, "David swings his ass off."
David is also known for his original
lyrics. His first album for Meridian Records
with the much
recorded late Phil Moore III, featured all
original songs. He has also written lyrics for
musicians such as Chick Correa and Mark
Levine.
David's performances took him to society
gigs under the late Ray Hackett's
Orchestration, musicals with the late Phil
Moore III, major San Francisco hotels, to
several jazz clubs in the San Francisco Bay
Area and in New Orleans and New York. In
addition, he has toured with the Danny Marona
Show.
David was the founder and executive
producer of the 1st San Francisco Latino Jazz
Festival and was one of the celebrants in the
historic picture featuring the Bay Area Giants
of Jazz recently featured in Downbeat
Magazine.
Some of the musicians David has performed
with include: Vernon Alley, Dave Brubeck,
Eugene Wright, Pete Escovedo, John Rae, George
DiQuattro, Smith Dobson, AI Molina, Vince
Lateano, Bruce Forman, Eddie, Carlos &
Manny Duran, Colin Bailey, Flip Nunez, Larry
